K-5 Library
The Gateway Library program is designed to help children become effective users of information while instilling a love of reading. Library Manager Merle Froshman collaborates with core teachers and specialists to provide a diverse collection of print and electronic resources that support Gateway’s active learning program.
During a library visit, children may listen to an interesting story, have a lesson in library skills or conduct research. Students learn about different literary genres (science fiction, mystery, poetry) and, as they get older, how to use the Dewey Decimal System. Students also visit the library independently to work on research projects or other assignments planned by their classroom teacher
Student Library Club
The Library Club gives students in grades four and five the opportunity to volunteer in the library. Members meet once a week to help with library duties or prepare special events such as the annual Book Fair.
Birthday Book Program
A birthday book postcard is sent to all Gateway families in advance of student birthdays, inviting families to donate money for the purchase of a new library book in your child’s name. A great gift for book lovers!
Volunteers
We are always looking for volunteers to reshelve books, read aloud to children, prepare books for cataloguing, and help with our annual Book Fair. If you’d like to volunteer in the Gateway Library, please contact merle.froshman@gatewaysc.org.
My Library, by Varda One
It’s only a room with shelves and books,
But it’s far more magical than it looks.
It’s a jet on which I soar
To lands that exist no more.
Or a key with which I find
Answers to questions crowding my mind.
Building my habit of learning and growing,
Asking and researching till I reach knowing.
Here, I’ve been a mermaid and an elf.
I’ve learned to be more myself.
I think that I shall never see
A place that’s been more useful to me.
With encouraging kind friends with wit
Who tell me to dream big and never quit.
It’s a only a room with shelves and books,
But it’s far more magical than it looks.
