Grades 6-8 Admissions Checklist

Please call Gateway’s admissions office to check space availability. If your child’s grade is waitlisted, we still encourage you to submit an application! When families relocate in the summer, we may have spaces open up. When space is available, we accept mid-year enrollments.

Complete the Application for Admission, Parent Questionnaire, and Outside Assessments/ Records Form and submit with your $125 fee.

3

School Records

Please sign the Records Release Form and give it to your child’s current school. Please also deliver the two Teacher Report Forms , one to your child’s current teacher, and one to another teacher or an administrator who knows your child well. The teacher reports must be mailed directly to Gateway School; please give the teachers stamped envelopes addressed to: Gateway School Admissions, 126 Eucalyptus Avenue, Santa Cruz CA 95060.

Academic Assessment

Sign up for a Grade 6-8 Applicant Assessment date:

March 6, 2010

Academic skills are assessed in the following areas: creative and expository writing, reading comprehension, grammar, punctuation, and math computation. Gateway uses standardized tests provided by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB) to assess grammar, punctuation, and math computation skills. Students are given breaks and snacks to break up the two-hour session.

5

School Visit/Interview

Schedule your child for assessment during a day-long visit (8:30-3:00) in his/her current grade. You child can get to know Gateway better, and our teachers can assess your child’s social and learning behavior skills. During the course of the day, the Director of Admissions will interview your child, using developmentally appropriate questions.

6

Evaluation and Notification

Applications will be evaluated and admissions letters mailed once steps 1-5 are complete.

“We have always been impressed by the quality of student that graduates from Gateway. By the end of eighth grade, the students seem to have such a well-developed sense of themselves. They have a level of confidence and a command of language that’s uncommon

—Jennifer F., Gateway parent

We are still accepting applications for the 2010-11 school year in most grades.
